Giles started his service in Maidstone with Kent Police in 1990. He progressed to spend many years policing the Medway Towns progressing from Inspector through to Superintendent as the Divisional Commander. He developed a credible portfolio as an operational commander for firearms, public order, football and channel tunnel critical response amongst other areas of operational command. He finished his service with Kent in 2004 as the Head of Special Branch with responsibility for the channel tunnel and Dover ports as well as national contribution to the Special Branch. In 2005 Giles was appointed as Assistant Chief Constable with South Wales Police, where he was the force lead for local policing as well as the Ops and Crime lead for the force. He was the regional lead for Counter Terrorism and Serious and Organised Crime, representing Welsh interests at many national meetings. He was the Gold Commander for several significant force and regional operations, including environmental protests across a number of force areas. He was promoted to Deputy Chief Constable in Sussex Police in 2008. Giles was the Programme Director for Serving Sussex 2015, the Force's change programme, which looked at ways of modernising the Force to improve the service for the public whilst making £50 million worth of savings. Giles is the force lead for Diversity and in this role he has established a network of force champions who lead internally and externally for different aspects of diversity. Giles’s work with the diversity champions has led to Sussex Police regularly being in the Stonewall top 100 employers (although we have just slipped below this year!) In 2014 he was promoted to chief constable for Sussex Police. He faces the challenge of finding about a further £55m over the coming years and is developing a plan that will exploit collaborative opportunities, predominantly with Surrey Police, combined with determined plans to reduce demand on policing in Sussex. He is the national police Business Area lead for Workforce Futures and the national Leadership portfolio within that. Giles implemented the Minerva programme coordinating Niche Development Board which seeks to deliver the opportunity for some 22 forces to operate from a single, cloud based platform. He is the SRO for Digital First, identifying the best way for the digital transfer of evidence across the criminal justice system. He is also the national lead for Intellectual Property Crime. Giles was awarded the Queen’s Policing Medal in the 2015 New Yea A POLICE chief risked his own life to help a bare chested man who was running into traffic on a 70mph dual carriageway. Sussex Police Chief Constable Giles York was on his way to an awards ceremony to praise the bravery of his officers when his own courage was tested on the hottest day of the year. Ryan Prince had taken cocaine and had started to suffer a high body temperature on the A264 near Pease Pottage. An inquest into the death of the 37-year-old father-of-four found he had gone into a “bizarre” hyperactive state of delirium. Mr York described the “frightening” and “confusing” incident where he had to rely on his 30 years of experience to keep Mr Prince safe and get him medical care.
